Pilot bushing

Pressed into the back of the crankshaft, the pilot bushing supports the nose of the transmission input shaft any time the clutch pedal is depressed and the input shaft stops spinning with the engine. When it wears, the input shaft can wobble — felt as shift notchiness or a rattle at idle that quiets when you press the clutch.
